Lately I’ve been doing a lot more writing and speaking about design, than actually making design. When I sat down recently to create the design of a new conference brand for a long-time client, I realized just how long it’s been since I focused completely on my own work (instead of helping a designer with theirs or doing invoicing or making spreadsheets or the million other non-design things a creative director has to do). I admit, I spent quite a bit of time starting at a blank page. But when the piece did start to come together, I think it really clicked. Here’s what I came up with.

On Tuesday, I’m heading over to the Association Media and Publishing annual conference to join more rock star colleagues to talk about MOVE magazine.

In the last year, a team from American Association of Motor Vehicles Administrators and Network have worked to remake the association’s quarterly magazine into a compelling digital and print hybrid piece. We tackled it from all angles (circulation, marketing, editorial, design, and advertising) and continue to challenge ourselves with every issue.

I’ll be joining a few rock star colleagues next week at the ASAE Marketing and Membership Conference, speaking on how to “Enhance Your Message with Effective Design.” On the list to cover:

Project Management 101 – the many roles a marketing director must play
How to make and use a creative brief (complete with take-homes!)

And what I’m calling the “new principles” of design (What’s that you ask? Maybe you should come find out)
and finally, how to give feedback to your design team (and how they should be hearing you).

We’re even planning a peer-to-peer review so bring your own marketing or membership pieces for some on-the-spot feedback from your peers.
